By: VC3, Inc. Gillette, WY, on March 1st approved a contract with VC3, a wireless systems integrator and IT services company, to deploy a 4G mobile broadband network utilizing IPWireless 3GPP-based end-to-end, mobile broadband solutions. The multi-agency wireless network provides police, utilities and other municipal departments with a single integrated network that enhances public safety and improves citywide data communications, while lowering overall communication costs. This contract is the culmination of a four year process that was led by the City’s Mobile Technology Committee to not only determine the best technology choice to meet the City’s mobile broadband needs, but also ascertain exactly what operational and cost efficiencies could be attained with a mobile broadband network. The Mobile Technology Committee was assisted in this effort by Excelsio Communications, a VC3 company, that researched the various technology options, developed a network design and also identified EBS spectrum that the City may lease to deploy a licensed 4G solution. “Excelsio and VC3 provided invaluable assistance to the City in guiding our Mobile Technology Committee through the myriad of wireless broadband options. In addition, they have shown that they have the expertise not only to make recommendations, but also to integrate those recommendations into a solution that meets the SCADA and mobile broadband needs of Gillette,” said Pamela L. Boger, Administrative Services Director. VC3 is managing the deployment process and providing system integration services, in conjunction with IPWireless. The network will consist of six RAN sites covering more than 40 square miles and 46 SCADA locations and will support over a half dozen municipal agencies including police, public works, utilities, planning, and engineering. The end-to-end network includes IPWireless 3GPP-based network infrastructure, chipsets, and end user device, and uses the same technology that is being used in the New York City Wireless Network (NYCWiN). IPWireless 3GPP mobile broadband solutions provide unmatched and uncompromising multi-megabit mobile broadband performance coupled with state-of-the art Quality of Service mechanisms, real-time service prioritization, and pre-emption, and are software upgradeable to LTE when the city is ready to transition. VC3 also deployed as part of the initial phase of this project a licensed microwave backbone network, that along with existing fiber infrastructure will form the backbone for the IPWireless infrastructure.
