To deal with the crisis, Chiayi Experimental Branch Station, Central Research Institute in Taiwan, has built a WebGIS system in order to have long-term monitor on the habitats of horticultural crop wild relatives and observe the evolution trend, aiming to assist the sustainable use of creature inheritance resources and conservation.
 
The system uses the Internet map server, SuperWebGIS 2.1, to be the Internet GIS platform and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express to be the database platform. SuperWebGIS is the professional solution for delivering dynamic maps and GIS data along with GIS services via the Web. Through the system, the related staffs can query, display, and modify the species without installing other internet browser objects. The users can also utilize SuperWebGIS to update, publish, share, and manage the data with ease.

The functions of the front end in the system contain 3 parts, Basic Map Manipulation, Species Query, and Query Result Display. The back end, on the other hand, includes 3 parts, User Management, Survey Data Management, and Species List Management.

The GIS for Horticultural Crop Wild Relatives provides a platform integrating GIS functions and species information. The efficiency of data providing from the unit is significantly improved. With WebGIS techniques, users can clearly recognize the growth and decline of the gene database and the evolution trend. It would be essential references for the sustainable use of creature gene sources and conservation.
