To prove my point, let’s take a look at what happens when you search “pizza” on Google. The top three listings that showed up for me: Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and Papa Johns. Now let’s try “pizza, orlando,” this time the top three listings were: Giordano’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, Anthony’s Pizza Cafe, and Alfonso’s Pizza. All three of these companies are small local pizza shops in Orlando and there wasn’t any sign of a large national brand. In fact, on the first page, the only national brand was Cici’s Pizza.

Search engines are used habitually by consumers now and they continue to get better and better at utilizing them to find what they want. For this reason, many consumers will enter their city, county, or state when performing a search for a product or service. Instead of going after the “big guys,” why not capture your local market first. By showing up in local searches you will increase the chances of consumers clicking through to your site. Also, with the right plan, you can develop your website to be more relevant to your local consumers than a national brand can. Before I’m done, let me make sure to tell you that although this is an easier process than competing in national searches, it is not an overnight process. But through careful planning and good implementation, you can capture your local search market and obtain business through search engines.
