Feb. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Spanish second largest mobile network operator, Vodafone Spain with over 17 million subscribers as of September 2009, has announced that it is currently running a pilot test -in the city of  Quirze de Vallés near Barcelona- aimed at assessing the possibility of ADSL connections replacement by HSPA.

Basically, the operator will provide a sample of 100 households or so with 3G HSPA modems with speeds up to 14.4Mbps up and 10.8Mbps down as well as wifi hotspots instead of ADSL routers to access the internet. According to the operator, the project that is expected to last for six months will bring answers to two main issues relevant to decision making:

  1. To which extent customers satisfaction with mobile broadband experience would be compared to ADSL?
  2. May the quality of  service through mobile broadband usage in terms of capacity and network efficiency, meet expectations and thereby, position HSPA as a serious alternative to fixed broadband in medium-sized cities?
