From Paradise to Hell

Military nurses taken prisoner in the Philippines in World War II faced deprivations they never could have imagined.

Feb. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- They went from needing only three pieces of clothing to survive in the Philippines as military nurses in World War II — a bathing suit because it was hot, their white uniform and cap for their 4-hour shift (yes, you heard right), and a long gown for regular formal evening events — to wearing rags as they cared for patients in the tunnels-turned-prisons of Corregidor Island. Soon as prisoners of war, maggoty porridge and fried weeds were common meals!

Elizabeth M. Norman, PhD, RN, professor at New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, New York City, captures the grim reality these brave nurses endured in her riveting book We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese, the next read for the ADVANCE for Nurses book club. About the ADVANCE for Nurses Online Book Club for Nurses
The ADVANCE for Nurses online book club discusses six books annually, covering a different book every 2 months. After reading We Band of Angels, join us May 5 as we read Josie's Story: A Mother's Inspiring Crusade to Make Medical Care Safe by Sorrel King, of interest to every nurse who values patient safety. July 7, we look at Alzheimer’s and its effects on the person and his family when we read Still Alice by Lisa Genova. Marking the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in September, the book club reads Nursing in the Storm: Voices from Hurricane Katrina, co-authored by Denise Danna, DNS, RN.

Similar to a traditional face-to-face book group, ADVANCE Book Club for Nurses members read the book and join in the online conversation, complemented by a podcasted interview or video with the author or a related expert.
