Feb. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Jacob Marshall is the drummer for Mae, a band that has successfully ridden the tempestuous wave of the recording industry, from indy success to major record deals, back to indy status when the recording industry began to crumble. In 2009, Mae embarked on an ambitious and innovative approach to distribution, combining philanthropy with online community building as they released M(orning), A(fternoon) and (E)vening.

At Encounter 10, Jacob will offer an answer to the question facing everyone hoping for a recording career: "From where will the audience come?" Offering insight from his experience with Mae, he will help to guide the discussion and offer practical advice for musicians of all genres.

With an eclectic roster of dynamic speakers, performers and artists, International Arts Movement’s Encounter 10 promises to be the creative event of the year, if not the decade. Artists and creative catalysts from all over the world will wrestle with issues that face the global creative community, with live performances, art exhibitions, and panel discussions rounding out the event’s programming.

Additional questions being addressed include: “How then shall we tell stories?” … “Does avant garde mean anything anymore?” … “Can physical and digital get along?” … “What is the quest(ion) of success?” … “Can faith communities foster artistry and creativity in culture?” and, “How can generosity and philanthropy lead to artistic sustainability?”

Additional speakers include Roberta Ahmanson (journalist and philanthropist), Dan Siedell (author, God in the Gallery, and art historian), Makoto Fujimura (artist, author and former National Council on the Arts member), Matt Heard (pastor and wine sommelier), Mark Chambers (avant garde painter), Etsuro Sotoo (Japanese sculptor), Jeffrey Overstreet (author, film critic), and David Sacks (photographer).

Performers for the weekend include jazz pianist Deanna Witkowski and folk band Ben + Vesper, whose latest album was produced by Sufjan Stevens.

Encounter 10 will take place at the newly renovated Great Hall at Cooper Union, a place that has housed weighty ideas, thinkers and movements since 1858. Nestled next to the stunning new Cooper Union Main Building in Greenwich Village, the Great Hall will be serve as homebase for each of the 10 questions.

When not gathered there, participants will take to the streets. Carefully selected coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, museums, and clubs will serve as creative zones for engagement. In partnership with The Curator magazine, Encounter 10 will move out into the cultural hub that is New York City to encounter one another and explore, discover and enjoy the innumerable cultural artifacts that ae already part of the world that ought to be.

IAM’s Encounter 10 takes place March 4-6 at Cooper Union’s Great Hall. More details and all registration information is at www.IAMencounter.com.
