5K Walk/Run in Brookhaven Directly Benefits DeKalb County Elementary School
$36,000 raised for Ashford Park Elementary School since 2008

ATLANTA (February 17, 2010) — The 2010 Brookhaven Bolt 5K Walk/Run presented by Brookhaven Self Storage is set for Saturday, May 15th.

Produced by the non-profit 501 (c)3 Brookhaven Bolt Community Association, the event takes place in one of Atlanta’s most beautiful neighborhoods, providing race participants and spectators alike the opportunity to directly and personally support the children of DeKalb County, the third largest county in metro Atlanta.  Now in it’s third year, the Brookhaven Bolt is quickly becoming one of Atlanta’s fastest growing running events.  Since it's inception, over 1,400 runners have pounded the pavement for this great cause.

The beneficiary of the event is Ashford Park Elementary School.  The school, with 316 students tucked into an exciting and changing residential neighborhood, has witnessed a tremendous spike in community, teacher and parent involvement.  A PTA organization thrives where one hardly existed just a few years ago.  “The Brookhaven Bolt has really become a unifying event for the whole community whether the members have children at APS or not.  They know that a viable, healthy school is priority for a community.” states Ashford Park Principal Toni Fallon.

Adds Brookhaven Bolt Executive Director Bill Sluben, “”The Brookhaven Bolt is a shining example of a community coming together in financial support of it's school in a time where public education budgets are being reduced at an alarming rate”.

“The Brookhaven Bolt funds help our day-to-day operation.  The bulk of the funds go to student supplies.  Whatever isn't used immediately to fund school needs is placed into the school's operating account” Ms Fallon added.  “If we did not have the Brookhaven Bolt we would be in dire straights”.
