Follow on Google News | New On-demand Publisher In Search Of Authors And PoetsBloodstone Books, a new on-demand publishing house launched in Cambridge by a team of professionals from the world of traditional publishing, is offering new authors and poets a smarter, more cost-effective route to get their work into print.
By: Bloodstone Books The launch is a result of changes in the publishing business that have seen High Street bookshops like Borders close, online bookshops like Amazon expand, and the introduction of on-demand printing. As a result, while mainstream publishers are publishing fewer new authors and poets than ever before, on-demand publishing companies are stepping into the breach with a range of paid-for publishing services. As Marketing Director for Bloodstone Books, Matt Hilbert, comments: ‘The book publishing industry is in a state of flux. While it’s harder than ever for new writers to get published, print on-demand technology and Internet retailers like Amazon have actually made it easier for writers to take control and get their own work out there.’ Print on-demand, commonly referred to as POD, means that books are literally printed ‘hot off the press’ in quantities as small a single copy. The books still feature on the pages of online bookshops like Amazon and are available from High Street bookshops but, once ordered, are printed and bound overnight and delivered the following day. Crucially for authors and poets, the quality of the finished books is indistinguishable from that of books printed in the traditional manner. Amazon has even launched its own print on-demand service, Booksurge, specifically aimed at publishers who produce on-demand titles. ‘The combination of the latest print on-demand technology and the increasing number of people buying books through the Internet changes everything,’ Publishing packages from £149 Following a year in development, during which the team behind Bloodstone Books have been test publishing books in a variety of formats and sizes, a range of publishing packages have now been introduced. For those who want to privately publish a memoir or book for family and friends, the Basic package offers ten books for £149, including typesetting. For those who want to aim a little higher and see their books featured on Amazon and available to High Street bookshops, the Bronze and Silver packages offer different advantages for £395 and £795 respectively. Finally, for those who want the addition of editing and marketing services, the cost is £1,595. A growing publication list Alongside self publishing services for authors and poets, Bloodstone Books will also be publishing a list of titles from established writers like Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allan Poe and John Buchan. ‘Bloodstone Books aims to keep alive great writing from the past – and discover the great writing of the future,’ Matt Hilbert concludes.
