Jan. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- The Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro cigar, made in Nicaragua, was recently ranked number one in the Top 25 Best Cigars of the Year 2009 published by Cigar Aficionado Magazine, a selection made among 700 cigars worldwide. According to the magazine, no company has dominated their ratings in the way Padrón Cigars has; this is the third time the company has been named Cigar of the Year, an honor that has only existed for six years.

Additionally, Nicaraguan cigars My Father No.1 (by My Father Cigars Inc.) and Oliva Serie V Liga Especial Belicoso (by Tabacalera Oliva Cigar S.A.) also made the magazine’s top 5 positions, further showcasing the country’s conditions for manufacturing world-class cigars. Nicaragua’s optimal climatic conditions in terms of rainfall, humidity, and wind speed, as well as its fertile soil, result in the production of high-quality tobacco with unique flavors and aromas that are characteristic of Nicaraguan cigars.

The Nicaraguan tobacco industry, which generates over 11,000 direct jobs and 17,000 indirect jobs, currently exports US$52.5 million in cigars and tobacco. According to the Foreign Trade Division of the United States Census Bureau, from 2004 to 2008 the percentage growth of exports of these products from Nicaragua to the United States surpassed the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

The Government of Nicaragua has been actively promoting the development of the tobacco industry and on December 2009 supported the organization of the first cigar festival, titled “Taste and Aroma of Nicaragua”. The event took place in the renowned cigar-producing city of Estelí and gathered more than 70 tobacco distributors from the United States, Europe and the Dominican Republic. Some of the most prestigious companies that attended the event included Scandinavian, PARDOMO cigars, Drew State, Padron, and Plasencia. Nicaragua now joins Cuba and the Dominican Republic as one of the few countries that organize international festivals to promote the enjoyment and creation of fine cigars.
