| Only Few Cities Have Proved Their Mettle In The Wake Of RecessionIt may be surprising but tough financial phases are significant as well. There are cities in the UK, which have succeeded even in the midst of an economic recession.
By: Lilly Even the world is in the grip of recession, some cities have emerged from its clutches and have been able to succeed. However, there are some, which are performing badly. As the huge gap between the cities of UK was already prevailing, it has consequently widened with the advent of recession. As we take into account the last two years, we find that the difference between the two cities, Hull and Cambridge, has nearly doubled in terms of claiming job seeker's allowance. It means that coming out of recession would not be even throughout the cities of UK. If some cities are expected to do better, others may perform abysmally low. The report by Centre for Cities has proved that cities such as Barnsley and Stoke on Trent, which were already hit hard by the economic crisis would not be able to perform up to the mark. One of the major factors behind non-performing cities is their reliance on the public sector against private sector. The report categorically stated "In a tight public spending climate constructing shiny new city centre buildings will not be possible, suggesting a more back to basics approach to urban regeneration - improving schools, adult skills and public transport so businesses will want to invest." The report also touched upon the fact that strong private sector presence along with high levels of entrepreneurship is highly needed for progress. The fundamental behind the current scenario remains that weaker the business base, slower the economic growth. Since cities such as Burnley, Stoke, Barnsley, Doncaster, and Newport in South Wales have a much weaker business base, they are likely to suffer in the wake of recession. Since these cities have a low level of qualification when it comes to its citizenry, they do not seem to perform as per the expected standards. Therefore, cities with much stronger business base are more likely to emerge from the recession as compared to the cities without it. In the wake of this report, it is expected from the next government to fix the problem by addressing the perennial needs of cities such as education and consolidation of the business base. The report has also proved that ways and strategies to deal with the problems of the cities must be in accordance with the perennial needs instead of depending on a universal formula to cure all the ills at once.
