I live in the south of England and I remember as a child that every year without fail we would get a fair amount of snow. These days however there has been a significant change in the weather, we are lucky to get a mild snow shower.

When I was 10 years old some mornings we would have to dig the car out of the drive so we could get to school, we would have 7 foot high snow drifts up our back door and we would build a huge snowman or igloo in the back garden. Every year without fail we would be able to go sledging down the largest hill in our area.

It's a shame that the children of today in my area anyway, are not experiencing the same winters as myself, they are usually quite happy to stay indoors and either watch television or play video games when its cold outside. Every now and again we will get a very small amount of snow and the kids love it, as soon as they see a snowflake they are out in the garden jumping around in it and if there is enough building a small snowman.

I think our generation has a lot to answer for, we have benefited for the luxuries that technology has produced but at what cost. Children today are quite happy to jump on MSN or face-book instead of enjoying the outside world. Whereas when I was a child we would go on long bike rides, camping trips, fishing trips and just generally exploring where we lived. If we got bored we would go build a rope swing, or tree house, something constructive.

Every year we seem to get less and less snow and that makes me very sad as seeing a nice coating of snow in the mornings always reminds me of when I was a child and the excitement of having something different to do.
