| ![]() Make It! Fix it! Build it! FabShop 2010New for 2010: The Center for Metal Arts now offers hands-on time for students, aspiring artists, and serious makers to work at your own pace in the metals studio. Learn skills, fix, invent, and fabricate under the eye of an experienced advisor.
The Center for Metal Arts has a new FabShop Program for 2010 for independent study in blacksmithing and fabrication, with access to tools, equipment and personal instruction. Open shop hours are from 9-2 on Saturdays, at the Center for Metal Arts in Florida NY. FabShop works for everyone, regardless of skill level. If you already know how to use the equipment, you can rent open shop time to fix, invent, and fabricate. If you want to use equipment that you don't have experience with, we will give you one-on-one training. bring in your own project or amp up your metalworking skills. Learn to make repairs, forge something of your own design, build something functional, or sculpt! FabShop operates a bit like a health club, with metal tools instead of exercise equipment. FabShop is a working metals studio, with MIG, TIG, bending and forming equipment, AND it is also a fully-equipped blacksmith studio, with forges, anvils, and tooling sets at each workspace. FabShop is perfect for makers and fixers, inventors and artists, families and students. Hours for your personal shop time plus an instructor are $35/hr., or talk to us about personal arrangements. FabShop also offers basic skills training workshops in welding and blacksmithing, metal construction, and repairs. Learn the tricks and skills of good metal practice from the professionals. Or learn blacksmithing skills in a fully-equipped working blacksmith studio. Below are the current workshop areas. • Basics of MIG Welding Learn to use the MIG equipment setup with solid wire and shielding gas to create a quality weld bead on mild steel. • Basics of TIG Welding Learn to use the TIG equipment setup to create a quality weld bead on mild steel, stainless, and aluminum. Learn how to produce a very pure, precise and attractive weld. • Blacksmithing Fundamentals Ergonomic hammer control and body stance, the physics of moving metal, different ways to use the anvil surfaces and hardee, fire control and how metal moves under different heats, peening, tapering, scrolling, bending, rounding and punching, working from stock shapes. Tool making and the uses of dies. • Advanced Metals Advanced blacksmithing techniques and more complicated metal fabrications.
