Dec. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- Berkeley Square in Mayfair, London, is predominantly a residential enclave inhabited by affluent citizens where residence and property is highly sought after and does not appear on the market very often. With the high level of demand and expectations already set, it required a specialist project contractor to meet the benchmark.

Cold Control were called upon to assist the clients own construction company to transform this exclusive residential premise by providing comfort cooling and heating, with the use of Mitsubishi VRF air conditioning equipment throughout. The company identified this type of system as the ideal solution to suit the clients specific requirements whilst also being able to compliment the buildings authentic, Grade I features. Cold Control had to ensure that none of the work they were undertaking would undermine the look or feel of the precious building.

After careful consideration and meticulous planning, the Mitsubishi VRF heat recovery systems were chosen for it’s environmental advantages, reliability and installation adaptability to suit the challenging circumstances.

The company appreciated that attention to detail was instrumental in meeting the clients taste and requirement to provide a comfortable working and living environment. When facing the combined imperatives of customer comfort and cost-efficient use of space, Cold Control understands that an intelligently designed installation can add to the bottom line.

Cold Control understood the importance of improving the comfort of the building whilst complimenting the interior design. With this in mind, ceiling cassettes were only installed within the Mews section of the house, which is to be used as a general office area, whilst chassis type fan coil units were installed throughout the main house, that have been discretely concealed within antique style cabinets, dressers and sideboards, which have been hand made to eliminate any unsightly air conditioning units and take nothing away from the picture perfect rooms that compliment the aesthetics of the Grade I listed building.

Cold Control extended their services to include the fitting of a modern kitchens, including sinks, cooker hoods and wall mounted air conditioning units. Existing toilets on every floor were upgraded to offer state of the art fully marbled washrooms, incorporating new sanitary ware, including WC pans, basins and showers, all supplied and installed by Cold Control, along with new domestic services and drainage pipe work. The ventilation systems to both cores of washrooms were also upgraded.

The domestic hot water services within both the main building in Berkeley Square and the Mews building, is provided by Gledhill type hot water generator that is linked to a Mitsubishi type Heat Pump boiler which recovers normally wasted heat from the air conditioning system to raise the temperature of the domestic hot water to 45c, which is then boosted to the required 60c by electric immersion heaters. These systems have eliminated the need for gas supplies to provide hot water and at the same time will provide a reduction in running costs and CO2 omissions

Additionally, a Qualitair stainless steel type cellar cooling system complete with electric heaters was supplied and fitted to offer the perfect storage conditions for the client’s extensive collection of fine wines due to be stored in the Oak lined wine cellar located within the external vault beneath the road.

The design and planning methods were integral to the success of the renovation due to certain parameters, which are set when renovating Grade I, listed buildings. Meticulous planning was required to adhere and meet the requirements of the Local Planning Authority to grant consent to the building methods proposed by Cold Control, along with the client’s specifications. The importance of the planning methods was emphasised and confirmed to have been met by British Heritage who visited the site several times during construction to ensure the work being executed met their stringent requirements and was not disfiguring the original building style, as the building is considered extremely prestigious.

Cold Control provided the client with simple control of the sophisticated system installed, by the installation of a Mitsubishi TG2000 Building Management System located within the main Sever room, The TG2000 offers centralised control of all the systems installed, with simple computer operation and associated user friendly graphics.

Cold Control successfully assisted with the transformation of this Grade 1 listed formally residential building into an up to date fully operational office facility, of the highest standard by providing a comfortable working environment through the installation of the latest style VRF air conditioning equipment. This was achieved whilst meeting current Building Regulations, Local Planning Authority and client specification to create a cooling system that complimented the Grade One interior design.

Mark Gant, Managing Director of Cold Control commented, “ Due to the buildings age, importance and architectural significance, we invested significant time in the planning stage, ensuring that all the design specifications met with the local planning authority, current building legislations and the clients specifications. The renovation was a great success with all the installations complimenting and preserving the aesthetics of the buildings original structure and character.”
