New York Repertory Orchestra Annual Benefit Concert: Music by Thomson, Poulenc, and Saint-Saëns!

Music by Virgil Thomson, Francis Poulenc, and Camille Saint-Saëns is on the program on December 19 as New York's finest all-volunteer orchestra continues its innovative season of orchestral rarities and masterworks with its Annual Benefit Concert.

Nov. 21, 2009 - PRLog -- On Saturday evening, December 19, New Yorkers will have the chance to experience something that they could never hear at Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall -- two of the great musical masterpieces for orchestra and organ performed with one of the country's finest pipe organs and by one of New York's finest organ virtuosos.

This is a rare opportunity to hear these works as the composers intended them: Francis Poulenc's Concerto for Organ and Camille Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3 ("Organ" Symphony) were created to take advantage of the rich and majestic sounds of both orchestra and organ. No electronic organ (as are used in the major concert halls in NYC) can hope to match the visceral excitement and emotional immediacy that one gets from the hearing the genuine article.

More about the program:

NYRO's season continues on December 19, with its Annual Benefit Concert.

Camille Saint-Saëns' massive and majestic Third Symphony gloriously combines the full range of sounds available in a large orchestra and grand pipe organ. By turns dark and ominous, quiet and celestial, and finally, ecstatically triumphant, the symphony brilliantly marries these two musical powerhouses.

The Organ Concerto by Francis Poulenc is one of the major works for solo organist and orchestra in the entire repertoire and is a dazzling tour de force for soloist and orchestra alike. With stark clarity and emotional depth, Poulenc perfectly balances two important sides of his character -- the spiritual and secular.

As organ soloist for the Poulenc and Saint-Saëns, the virtuoso organist James Kennerley will make his debut on the NYRO stage. A native of the United Kingdom, Mr. Kennerley was educated at Harrow School and Cambridge University, where he was Organ Scholar at Jesus College. He was then appointed Organ Scholar of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. Mr. Kennerley is currently the Music Director/Organist at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin.

Virgil Thomson's score for the film "The Plow that Broke the Plains" (1936) is a landmark in American film music and is among the most famous ever composed for the movies. Aaron Copland praised the music for its "frankness and openness of feeling," calling it "fresher, more simple, and more personal" than the Hollywood norm.
