Conception Woes Heightened by Lack of Fertility Knowledge

Infertility can be frustrating. Many couples don’t know how to interpret their signs of fertility, but this can be remedied by taking a class in Natural Family Planning (NFP) from the Couple to Couple League.

Nov. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- Although Natural Family Planning (NFP) has been used to help couples achieve pregnancy for some forty years, more than a third of women trying to conceive today do not know how to adequately recognize their bodily fertility signs, according to a new study from England.

Seventy-three percent of women who are trying to conceive track their ovulation, and 93% use their fertility signs as indicators of it, according to the study, sponsored by Cambridge Temperature Concepts, of Cambridge. The company produces DouFertility, a device worn on a woman’s side that uses a computer to detect basal body temperature to predict the fertile time in a woman’s cycle. More than a third of women do not know how to interpret their fertility signs, according to the study.

Ten percent of couples in the United States have problems conceiving a child, according to a Guttmacher Institute study, and one in six couples in Britain have infertility troubles, according to Cambridge Temperature Concepts.

"These fertility clues are commonly used by couples practicing natural family planning,” said Dr. Bennett, a general practitioner with a special interest in Natural Family Planning in Cambridge, referring to the temperature sign. He added that couples have learned how to detect fertility with the help of a Natural Family Planning teacher. “However, a couple trying for a baby often don’t feel that they have the time to learn how to identify these clues, which may result in the signs being misinterpreted."

The Couple to Couple League (CCL) has been successfully teaching couples since 1971 how to interpret the signs of fertility to either avoid or plan for pregnancy. Classes in the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family Planning are offered by CCL to married and engaged couples, and can be taken at 15 locations in the Archdiocese of Chicago, IL and surrounding area, including southeast Milwaukee and northwest Indiana. A homestudy course is also available at CCL Central.

The next series of classes in northeast Illinois will begin Fri., Jan. 29, 2010 at 7:30 pm at Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines. To register, and for a list of classes, go to the CCL Central class locator at http://register.ccli.org/search. Or go to the CCL of Chicago website at http://www.naturalfamilyplanningchicago.com.
