FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OAKLAND – October 2009 – "Pairings", an exhibition of photographs, photograms, polaroids, and paintings by Jim Doukas, will open on November 6, 2009 at the Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland and end on December 28, 2009. Doukas is one of the rare photographers of our time who utilizes various materials,  methods, and the darkroom in his practice - valuating the phenomenon and visceral experience of classical and hand-made Photography.

This exhibition features a selection of work from the book Ancient Mythologies; Recent Visitations; work which spans the last 40 years.  Included also in the exhibition are recent pieces from  2009 called Branches -- work which extends the  mythologies to include European histories. And finally the exhibition includes Polaroid Pairings,  a tribute to the late Dr. Land, the inventor of Polaroid. As Polaroid materials are now longer made, this is one of the last possible exhibitions featuring newly exposed polaroids.

Jim Doukas was born in New York and received a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an artist and educator who has taught at Ohlone College, Cabrillo College and at the City of College, San Francisco which he served as Department Chair for two years.  He has also taught workshops on Dye Transfer and Photography in South America, Asia and Europe.  In the past, Doukas has been designated by the Saudi Arabian government to design University of Riyadh Photography Complex.   Jim Doukas has had several exhibitions of his works in California, Mexico, France and Barcelona, Spain.
