Swept into the recklessness
Gyulai’s memoir shows the rarely seen side of nightlife in Rome for twentysomethings
LOS ANGELES – Typical memoirs about adventurous, world-famous Rome, Italy are mostly written by semi-retired, middle-aged men. Midnight in Rome, (published by iUniverse) by then 23-year-old Michael Gyulai, isn’t one of those typical memoirs.

After graduating with honors from UCLA, Gyulai fulfilled a lifelong dream as he traveled to Rome. Even with under $5,000 in his bank account, Gyulai wouldn’t be stopped and when he moves into a flat on the outskirts of the city center his dreams are fulfilled.

“Midnight in Rome takes readers on a firsthand tour through the sights of Rome rarely seen: secluded smoke-filled taverns and sleek, ultra-modern nightclubs,” Gyulai said. “I explore the challenges in gaining orientation within the bustling metropolis, and adapting to an overseas peer group’s out-of-control lifestyle and foreign tongue. Midnight in Rome provides a firsthand tour of Rome that few tourists, armchair travelers, even resident Romans themselves, have an opportunity to witness.”

But as Gyulai sees his banking account start to dwindle even more, he knows that he must find work. That would require a work visa, something Gyulai doesn‘t hold. But the resourceful Gyulai finds a way to work at a nightclub thanks to the signature of a doctor at a local health department and it opens the doors to the urban, underground nightlife sector of Rome that many don’t get to see.

“I was 23, my bank account had all but emptied, my visa long expired, and I had to accept the possibility of deportation every day I went into work -- all while transitioning into independent, self-sustaining adulthood,” he said.

Suddenly, Gyulai is swept into the recklessness and diversions of the nightlife staff at Metro while trying to come to grips with the infatuation of a new-found woman in his life -- Skye -- while also trying to find out if Rome is his future or just a flash in his life.
