China is engaged in a battle to develop the country's petroleum reserve ability to meet any emergency, as Chinese oil majors go full swing to build crude and product oil reserve bases throughout the country.

Daqing oil field, the flagship oil field owned by CNPC, is planning to build more clusters of large-scale oil storage tanks in the oil city, according to a company source. Besides Daqing oil field's Nansan Oil Storage, the oil field has completed two 150,000-cubic-meter tanks in 2009.

The oil field plans to build another eight such oil tanks to add 1 million tons of stockpiling capacity by 2010, pushing up Daqing oil field's total stockpiling capacity to over 3 million tons, equal to the oil field's monthly production.

In Xinjiang, the country's emerging oil-producing center, CNPC will also increase stockpiling capacity.

An oil storage base with total designed capacity of 8 million cubic meters is to be built in the country northwestern province. About ten 100,000-cubic-meter oil tanks have been ready, while many more are still under construction.

In the meantime, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, the state-run national strategic crude oil reserve will also enter into second phase construction.
