Composer Bertolozzi Brings Bridge Music To Elant At Fishkill Sept. 24Elant at Fishkill is pleased to host composer and percussionist Joseph Bertolozzi, who will discuss his latest public art project, Bridge Music, during a Sept. 24 presentation at 2:30 p.m. that will be open to the public.
By: Elant, Inc. Bridge Music is a unique, sound-art installation featuring the Mid-Hudson Bridge as the instrument itself. Bridge Music was created by recording sounds from bridge surfaces (guardrails, girders, etc.) with various mallets and using those sounds to compose new works, making the Mid-Hudson Bridge the largest percussion instrument in the world. In June Bertolozzi’s work was launched as an installation. Its two components are the Listening Stations, a type of massive jukebox mounted directly on the bridge's towers, accessible from the north pedestrian sidewalks, and the Park Radios transmitting on 95.3 FM within the parks flanking the bridge (Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie and Johnson-Iorio Park in Highland) for those who may not be able to access the bridge. The Listening Stations on the bridge towers are open annually from April through October 31, although the station airs the compositions 24 hours a day 365 days a year. A CD of the music (Bridge Music, Delos 1045) is also available from all major music stores and digital services. While at Elant at Fishkill, Bertolozzi will offer detail in regard to the concept behind Bridge Music, in addition to explaining how he brought the concept to life. “I’ve been working Bridge Music for five years, leaving me very little time to devote to outside community endeavors,” Bertolozzi said. “Now that the project is complete, I can finally get more involved. Many of Elant at Fishkill’s residents aren’t able to enjoy the presentation on the bridge itself, so it is rewarding to think I can bring it to them through active discussion.” So what’s next for Poughkeepsie native Bertolozzi? He is diligently working to find a suitable stage for his symphonic ballet score about two young lovers Bosko and Admira, one Serbian the other Muslim, who were killed while trying to cross over to the Serbia in 1993. While Bosko was killed instantly, Admira lived long enough to crawl over to Bosko and drape her arm over his body in a last embrace.
