Hi Tech Green Alternative to Curb Wasteful Showering

Aug. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- For parents who are struggling to stay green with mandated or self imposed cut backs in water consumption, a new device called the Shower Manager can produce big results. It is an automated shower timer that not only puts a time limit on showers; it cuts the water flow when the time limit is up.   It replaces the voluntary efforts of digital timers, knocks on the door, etc. that teenagers (and some adults) frequently ignore.  

The unit fits to existing showerheads. The head-of-the-household using a magnetic sensor locks-in one of three full-flow time settings: 5, 8 or 11 minutes.  When the bather turns on the water, the unit delivers a full-flow of water for the setting selected.  When the time limit expires, the water flow is cut by 2/3. This cut or restricted flow leaves just enough to finish rinsing, but not enough to encourage continue showering.
   
Sixty seconds prior to the end of a full-flow cycle, the unit gives off a beep, letting the bather know a change is coming. Also, a 5-minute reset interval prevents the users from overriding the system.  The unit is microprocessor controlled, fits to existing showerheads, and installs in minutes. No special plumbing/ no electrical connections. It is powered by a small battery.

Water providers say that showering uses as much as 22 % of the water consumed inside the home.  A family of four can be washing down the drain hundreds of dollars annually with wasteful showering.  In a typical family of four, the unit can pay for itself in less than 12 months.
