By: Simon Drew The BlackBerry Curve is a smart phone. It may have stripped down specs and not quite the smart phone one would expect, but it has all the basic needs and delivers a good package all in all. The first noticeable difference of the 8520 from other phones of its generation is the obvious lack of a touch screen. In fact the 8520 only has a mediocre 320x240 screen. This is surprising for a phone with WiFi functions and the latest BlackBerry interface. BlackBerry fans are already passing this up for better, more hardcore models with touch screen and GPS capabilities. Still, this phone has its own place in the mobile device market. BlueBerry’s New Market Niche The BlackBerry Curve 8520 is not a new phone in terms of specs and functions, it is not an innovative design, nor is it a step forward in terms of technology. Instead, the BlackBerry is a new phone for the identity of BlackBerry. While older BlackBerry models were the pinnacle of sophisticated tech lifestyles. People who used to carry BlackBerry phones were those who were hard core gadget users. The 8520 on the other hand is a smart phone for a whole new crowd. The 8520 is for everyone. The availability and marketing of the new Curve 8520 alone is enough to back up this claim. Looking beyond that and into the phone itself, reveals so much more of BlackBerry’s intention for the Curve 8520. Dissecting the BlackBerry Curve 8520 As stated the screen of this device is a small 320x240 screen. It has a low resolution but it still works well for browsing websites and making messages. The lack of a GPS can be explained by the fact that such a small screen would not be able to display the maps efficiently. Instead of delivering a full touch screen for users, the Curve 8520 has a track pad. This track pad replaces the old BlackBerry trackball on the phones. By tracking finger movements accurately, the Curve 8520 still delivers an intuitive navigation system. The best feature of the track pad is that it makes a lot of things faster and smoother. The actual processor for the Curve 8520 is a little slow, there is a noticeable amount of lag when loading certain functions and the occasional slowdown between track pad input and actual response is quite noticeable. Sadly, this also makes the phone feel a little old and clunky. The camera on the other hand, is pretty decent. At two mega pixels, the camera is able to take some pretty decent features. There is no need for ha better camera since if you are the kind of person who wants very high resolution images, then this phone is definitely not what you will need. Instead this phone is perfect for those who just need a basic smart phone without the fuss.
