Last months' topic was about Spring cleaning for your PC, today we'll talk about extending the usable life of your POS somputers. Since computers are something most people ‘set up and forget’, I figured I’d continue down that track with some more of what I consider the basics. For restaurants, fast foods, hotels, convenient stores and other retail business owners, maintaining a good-conditioned computer system helps boost the sales. whether you are using the latest restaurant POS equipment or not, computer problems can greatly affect your business' performance. By following these few simple tips, you'll be able to keep your business running perfectly all the time. 1. Computers Needs Regular Maintenance. Just like your car needs an oil change, your computer needs regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly and extend its usable life. Tools like disk cleanup, defragmentation, and updating your virus protection files are important to keep your machine running at its’ best and to avoid small problems before they become really big problems. 2. It's Important To Have An Anti-virus Software Installed. As I always say, an antivirus software is a very important piece of software you should use. By now you should probably be aware of the attacks coming from the internet and sneaky infected emails. Anti-virus software will notify you before you open the infected file and release the virus to do damage. One key point to remember is anti-virus software cannot repair is the damage that has already been done by a virus. The anti-virus software requires updates and you can do this monthly so it is "up-to-date" 3. Backup Backup Backup. It's one of the most important things you must do so you would never loose another important file ever again. CDs and/or DVDs, Tape Drives, Memory Sticks and USB External Hard Drives all make good backup media. And once your backup plan is ready for use, use it regularly! All computers will eventually retire someday. I hate to tell you this, but no matter how new or old your computer is, it will stop working one day. Your computer is a machine. Sadly, machines don’t last a lifetime. Files your computer holds can be priceless to replace. Think of all those financial data, e-mail contacts in your email address book, digital pictures, recipes, and on and on. One day you will go to start that machine and it will not start! At that exact moment you'll be thinking, BACKUP. What are your ways to backup all of your computer data? I find it surprising that most people don't even have a backup plan. You will never realize just how much you have until it's gone! So if you don't have a backup yet, better start planning on it. In a restaurant, having a backup plan is a must. Why? Because there are so many data you'll be needing for future references, just like your employee and customer info, products and services data of the restaurant, and so on. To be able to effectively track down sales and inventories, a reliable restaurant POS system must be used. And maintaining your POS systems in good condition is the best way to protect it. 4. Let An Expert Do What They Do Best. If your computer needs service, seek out help of a well trained technician, other than hiring your so-called computer expert neighbor. Your friends’ son may know a bit about fixing your problem, but many times the problems even gets worse. This can cost you time and money in the end. Remember, your computer system is the ‘center’ of your business.
