DDA Wins Contract to Supply Explosive-Detection Dogs to the Sri Lankan Air Force

July 31, 2009 - PRLog -- Detector Dogs Australia (DDA) has won a contract to supply explosive-detection and bomb-detection dogs to the Sri Lankan Air Force. The K-9 shipment will have the responsibility of screening vehicles - luggage and suspicious containers - and walking areas in which an explosive item might be left if security measures were breached. Trained man-and-dog teams offer a greater high sight presence and deterrent than any number of security personal.

DDA's CEO Mr Kris Kotsopoulos said, "It’s been proven that some dogs can detect odours of narcotics and explosives in parts per billion, which means that a dog has a greater ability to detect odour or intruder than any other type of mechanical equipment. The biggest difference between dogs and equipment is that equipment has to come in close contact with the package being tested, whereas a dog actually is working with odour that is carried through air currents."

"We don't consider ourselves to be a dog company," Kotsopoulos stated. "Our primary technology is old-fashioned, low-tech dogs and their noses and teeth, but we're big subscribers to a layered technology approach to protection. Our approach is to layer what we do with the dogs with other technologies, such as trace detection technology that works very specifically on odours, but can't cover the area or work as fast to accomplish all the goals that we can with dogs."

Personal-protection trained K9s

DDA candidates go through a rigorous three to four-month training process. During this period they undergo a thorough behaviour-modification process to determine the natural drives of the dog. Trainers develop cues through a certain drill, word or action to excite the dog to search for an odour associated with a reward. With a personal-protection trained K9, we offer expatriate clients the opportunity to secure an armed guard that won't lie, cheat, steal, or sleep on the job. Once training is completed, the dogs work multiple hours a week to keep their minds fresh on their jobs and are sent out to on-site work.

DDA is a member of the International Society of Explosive Engineers and the National Police Canine Association (US). DDA canine teams screen large areas quicker and far more proficiently than the standard security officer. If clients didn't use trained protection/detection dogs they would be required to employ more than twice the manpower they currently have to do the same job. More manpower does not always mean better security. Though humans can do many things that dogs cannot, they do not have the ability to detect explosives or an intruder, and therefore lack the major benefits of a detection dog.

Kotsopoulos believes that personnel and customers are far more confident with a canine than with other forms of explosive-detection technology, and certainly much higher than that of any person trying to detect explosive items.
