Charleston County Implements EnerGov Citizen Access for Online Services

Charleston County, South Carolina, Implemented EnerGov Citizen Access offering Transparent and Convenient Online Services to over 640,000 Citizens

July 28, 2009 - PRLog -- Government transparency is now more than a “slogan” for the taxpayers of Charleston County, which recently went live with a new online services portal. EnerGov’s Citizen Access web portal has been implemented as part of the County’s continued goal in bringing more efficient local government services to over 640,000 citizens the County agency serves. The online system now allows the public a variety of features including:  Applying and paying for permits, scheduling and checking on the status of inspections as well as renewing and paying for county business and professional licenses.

“The online system will promote ‘going green’ in the building and permitting process with inspections, permits and results being available as close as the nearest computer or PDA device,” said Carl Simmons, Charleston County’s Building Inspections Director, in a May 4, 2009, Charleston County Government news release. “The saving of gas, time and mileage by not having to come to us in person will result in a better bottom line for businesses and the public.”

The capability to integrate business license data with building inspections is an intricate part of the new system. Charleston County Revenue Collections Director Elbert Matthews also said in the County’s news release that he is excited about the benefits the new system offers the public. “This latest online system is another part of our continued goal to bring local government services to our citizens and empower them to conduct local business transactions from the convenience of their business location or home,” Matthews said.

The “back-office” portion of the Citizen Access portal is the state-of-the-art EnerGov Land Management system, which City officials now use to better manage and streamline the planning, permitting, code enforcement and licensing departments of the county.  The uniquely configurable solution allows all departments and constituency to coordinate and share project, permit and site plan information, accurately tracking the information and allowing for quick retrieval of information to better manage the overall processes.
