Popular Proverbs Delivers Unique Perspective on Palestinian Cultural Identity

A new book by Dr. Nasser M. Isleem helps raise awareness of many of the deep-seated values, traditions and beliefs transmitted through Palestinian language and culture.

July 21, 2009 - PRLog -- Boston, MA -- While international attention focuses on the continuing military and political conflicts that plague the Middle East, relatively little is known about the rich cultural heritage of the Palestinian people. Popular Proverbs: An Entrance to Palestinian Culture, a new book by Dr. Nasser M. Isleem, presents an exploration of over one thousand commonly used proverbs, sayings and aphorisms as a reflection of the vibrant history and culture that produced them.

“Through the beautifully descriptive proverbs in his book, Isleem allows us to appreciate the Palestinian people for who they really are: warm, kind, and generous,” says Shai Tamari, Legislative Assistant on Foreign Affairs, U.S. House of Representatives. “It’s Arab culture with a dash of politics and humor!” says Samir Haddad, host of Arabic Candles on WNZK Radio Detroit.

Passed down from generation to generation, these proverbs have endured the test of time and continue to play a vital role in daily communication today. “Popular Proverbs includes traditional stories and cultural references that will hit home with Arabs everywhere and provide all others with a real insider’s perspective,” says Dr. Isleem. “Ensuring the continuation of this important cultural tradition will help pass on many time-honored customs and values to future generations while encouraging better cultural understanding for all.”

Each proverb is presented in Arabic with its corresponding transliteration, translation and English equivalent. Following each proverb is a detailed description of how the proverbs are used in Palestinian culture as well as an exploration of their origin, relevance in present-day society and related stories of interest.

Popular Proverbs is published in English by Alucen Learning and is available for sale by the publisher at http://www.alucen.com/order as well as through amazon.com and other retail channels worldwide. For more information about the book please visit http://www.alucen.com/popularproverbs.
