Former UN Employee Wins Political Asylum after Twenty One-Day Kidnapping in Iraq

A former employee of the United Nations World Health Organization was granted political asylum today in Newark, NJ after having been kidnapped and tortured in Iraq for twenty one days.

July 15, 2009 - PRLog -- Mr. A-, a successful computer consultant and eight-year veteran of the United Nations World Health Organization in Baghdad, was granted political asylum today in Immigration Court, in Newark, New Jersey. In May, 2007, Mr. A- was forcefully kidnapped from his offices in Baghdad, and taken to a secret ranch where he was tortured, beaten, starved and interrogated for twenty one days. Ultimately, Mr. A- was released after his family paid the ransom demanded. He then made his way to Jordan, where he received medical treatment for his broken arm and nose, malnutrition, dehydration and neurological problems. Finally, Mr. A- came to the United States and has been under going intensive treatment at the Bellevu/NYU Program For Survivors of Torture, New York University School of Medicine.

After a full trial on the merits, the Immigration Judge granted Mr. A-'s request for political asylum in the United States. His asylum status will become final in Octobner 2009 when his routine security checks are completed. One year later, Mr. A- will be eligible to apply for lawful permanent residence in the United States
