The Basics: How Conditioned is Your Hair?

Your hair needs a great support system. A essential part of this system needs to be a great conditioner.

July 8, 2009 - PRLog -- Conditioners are important because they can replenish moisture lost during any type of chemical or hair service. They are used to deposit protein, to help restore hair's strength and to give it body; they also protect against possible damage. Additionally, conditioners coat the hair shaft to give it a shiny appearance. A great stylist is also a pivotal member of your hair's support system! We at Curl Salon want to ensure that your hair is in the best condition possible by providing you with some conditioner information and by putting the best stylists only a phone call away!

Just like shampoos, there are conditioners for every hair type and condition. There are three basic categories of conditioner; rinse through, treatment or repair, and leave-in. Rinse through conditioners are everyday conditioners, they are rinsed from the hair once it has been worked through. Treatment or repair conditioners include moisturizers and protein conditioners. These type of conditioners should remain on the hair for up to 15 minutes before being rinsed out. It may be helpful when using these types of conditioners to sit under a dryer. Leave-in conditioners are light moisturizing conditioners that are left on the hair during styling. Other styling products also have conditioning agents in them. Spray on heat protectants are a great example!

A common misconception about conditioners is that they will return hair to it's original healthy condition. This is not necessarily true. A series of conditioning treatments can be professionally applied to help repair damaged hair, but just using a good conditioner is not a magic wand for healthy hair. Healthy hair comes from routine care and maintenance. Your body's overall health and your diet also plays an important role in the health of your hair.
