By: Charlotte Literary Festival Nikki Giovanni is a distinguished poet, writer and activist. As one of the most prominent American poets, she prides herself on being a “Black American, a daughter, a mother and a professor of English,” as noted in her biography. Several of Giovanni’s books have been awarded. Most recently, her children’s book titled “Rosa”, about the civil rights marvel Rosa Parks became a Caldecott Honors Book. Giovanni presently serves as a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
