A Lesson in Hip Hop with Nikki Giovanni: An Evening of Entertainment for the Whole Family

One of the most prominent Black American poets, Nikki Giovanni, to present evening of dance performances, storytelling, live music and a public reading, in honor of her new project focusing on hip hop.

June 16, 2009 - PRLog -- Charlotte, NC - Nikki Giovanni is returning to Charlotte, and this time she is promoting her new project: Hip Hop Speaks to Children, A Celebration of Poetry With A Beat.  The collection, edited by Giovanni, is an ode to true Hip Hop history.  Ms. Giovanni will entertain both children and parents alike with a public reading on June 25, 2009 at Spirit Square’s McGlohon Theatre.  The event will also feature a Hip Hop dance performance from Millennium Dance Studio, storytelling, break dancing, live music and a host of other activities for kids.   This is part of the “Change is Coming to Charlotte” event series and serves as a fundraiser for the 2009 Charlotte Literary Festival and the “Kickoff to Writing” scholarship program.

Nikki Giovanni is a distinguished poet, writer and activist. As one of the most prominent American poets, she prides herself on being a “Black American, a daughter, a mother and a professor of English,” as noted in her biography. Several of Giovanni’s books have been awarded. Most recently, her children’s book titled “Rosa”, about the civil rights marvel Rosa Parks became a Caldecott Honors Book. Giovanni presently serves as a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
