Congress passes resolutions honoring Millard Fuller, Founder Habitat for Humanity, Fuller Center

More than 8000 signatures from 44 countries help boost support, both the House and Senate pass resolutions unanimously

June 12, 2009 - PRLog -- Both houses of the United States Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate, unanimously passed resolutions this week in honor of Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing.

Under Millard Fuller's leadership, Habitat for Humanity became one of the most recognized names in philanthropy.  Since it's founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 300,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1.5 million people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.

The Fuller Center for Housing, a non-profit housing ministry founded by Fuller and his wife Linda Fuller in 2005, is currently building and renovating homes for people in need in 53 U.S. communities and 16 countries worldwide.

More than 8,000 signatures from 44 countries were gathered shortly after Fuller's unexpected death on February 3rd, asking Congress to recognize Fuller as one of the greatest philanthropists of the 20th century.

Georgia Rep. Sanford Bishop sponsored the resolution within the House of Representatives, along with 68 co-sponsors.  “Throughout his life, Millard Fuller's talent and passion were put on display in no small number of ways.  Let us seek to emulate Millard Fuller's passion for the good and the just, and his selfless pursuit of a better, gentler world.”

The Senate resolution was introduced by Alabama Senator Richard Shelby and states, in part:  “Whereas Millard Fuller provided three decades of leadership and service to Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing, committing his life to philanthropy and service to others while raising global concern for homelessness and poverty.  It is resolved that the Senate.... acknowledges the millions of people he and his organizations have served and the inspiration he has given to so many.”

“[Millard's] goal was to eliminate poverty housing, here in the United States and around the world,” said Fuller Center President David Snell. ”It was an audacious dream, admittedly.  He not only got a great many houses built, he revolutionized the way Americans look at charitable giving and volunteerism in the process."
