Homebuilder Converts Business To Handyman Service To Beat Recession

When his home building business came to screeching halt due to the recession, Jon Moore decided to convert the business to a handyman business and was surprised at the demand for his services.

May 28, 2009 - PRLog -- When the real estate market crashed and financing for his spec homes dried up, former licensed contractor Jonathon Moore decided that rather than go to work for someone else, he would explore the feasibility of a handyman and home services business.  In the Hendersonville area there are a large number of retired homeowners, many of whom are unable to perform their own home work.  While Jon initially started doing a few home repair jobs to cover expenses during the months while he was waiting for his new job to start, he soon decided that he didn’t want to go to work for someone else.

Having enjoyed working for himself as a homebuilder for years, he knew he didn’t want to return to a steady 8-5 job where he had little autonomy and flexibility.  But he needed to prove to himself and to his wife that the work was there before giving up a steady paycheck with benefits.  Jon literally went door to door talking to people and handing out fliers with seemingly little to show for it.

When Jon first got the idea for the home service business he placed a lot of cold calls including one to the head of the Azalea Society.  Weeks later he landed some work with a neighbor of the man’s friend.  He built a fence for the family before mentioning that he could upgrade the safety of the 30-year-old home’s deck rails.  His work on the deck caught the attention of another neighbor who hired him to do some landscaping work.  While working on a lady’s home in Flat Rock, he met the owner of the Woodfield Inn next door, who soon hired him to do some repairs to the Inn.  As people begin to realize the many types of services that he offers such as landscape installation, home repair, remodeling, indoor and outdoor carpentry work and more, he is starting to get calls from repeat customers who have found new projects for him.

Fortunately for Jon, he has a talented family who has joined him in Moore Home Services.  Jon’s father-in-law, Mike Improta, has over 40 years of experience building homes and will be overseeing the larger remodeling jobs for Jon.  Jon’s wife Michele and her mother have worked together as professional housecleaners and will offer regularly scheduled house cleaning services as well as one-time jobs such as window cleaning.

While Jon realizes that Moore Home Services certainly isn’t the only company in the Hendersonville area that can perform these services, he’s hoping that the ease of having one company you can call to handle most all of your home service needs will be appealing to many families.  In order to convince new clients to give him a try, he’s set a low hourly rate for small jobs so that people can see his ability before hiring him for additional work.  So far his philosophy of complete home care at a reasonable price is appealing to many customers and is giving Moore Home Services a quickly expanding group of satisfied new customers.
