According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in September 2007, employers took 1,271 mass layoff actions, (seasonally adjusted, as measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits) which involved 123,656 workers.  This was an increase of 82 events from the prior month.

As corporations increasingly turn to downsizing as a method of improving cost efficiencies the divide between workers and the executive office continues to grow.
