Swine Flu Outbreak : Can It Stop Spreading Worldwide?

In Malaysia, it has been front page news since Saturday 16 May 2009 when the 1st & 2nd confirmed Swine Flu cases in the country was detected when 2 teenage students who returned from the US on Wednesday 18 May 2009 were confirmed to have contracted the virus.

The 2nd patient - a 21 year old female student in the US was on board the same flight as the 1st patient, also a 21 year old male student.
           
In less than 1 month, since 24 April 2009 when it was highlighted by World Health Organization (WHO) with 800 suspected Swine Flu  cases in Mexico and 7 cases in the US, the figures have multiplied very rapidly & alarmingly.

The world tally on Swine Flu, according to WHO has reached 8,541 confirmed human cases in 36 countries - with at least 73 deaths - including the death toll in the US which reached 5 on Friday 15 May 2009 with nearly 5,000 confirmed cases reported & 6 New York Schools closed.

New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg said the sick students showed symptoms that are no more serious than the seasonal flu, which strikes people in winter. More than 2,000 New Yorkers died every year from seasonal flu. In fact, New York City had the largest cluster of flu cases in the US in early May 2009. With the latest school closure, thousands of students had to stay at home while their classrooms were been sanitized.

Also, the latest countries that announced their 1st confirmed Swine Flu cases  on Saturday 16 May 2009 were Japan, India & Turkey.
