April 13, 2009 - PRLog -- The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York  (ACEC New York) has awarded Barton & Loguidice, P.C. (B&L) a 2009 Platinum Award for the Village of Whitehall Water System Improvements project through the organization's  Engineering Excellence Awards program.

This project is one of the first applications of membrane microfiltration technology for treatment of a surface water source used as a municipal drinking supply in New York State, and is the first fully successful application of membrane microfiltration technology for this application.

Membrane microfiltration operates under pressure and offers superior filtration of particulate contaminants such as giardia and cryptosporidium from the water supply, provides the potential to reduce elevated levels of Trihalomethanes below regulatory limits, and endures a low lifecycle cost.

The project involved construction of a new water treatment facility with a capacity of 1 million gallons per day to accommodate present and potential future water demands.

B&L performed a system-wide assessment and develop a multi-phased program of prioritized improvements to the village's aging water treatment system.  After evaluating four treatment technologies, B&L recommended membrane microfiltration as the most cost-effective alternative for the Village that would meet stringent finished water requirements.

The facilities plan was partially funded through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) FlexTech program. This funding resulted from an extensive energy study conducted and presented by B&L. The firm provided continued assistance with start-up, operations, and training allowing the village to easily transition to the new membrane microfiltration system.

Through the Engineering Excellence Awards program, ACEC New York recognizes and celebrates engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity among member firms.
