Retired UN Official Writes Political Drama Examining Women’s Rights
His Book Looks at Women’s Current Stance; What is Yet to Be Accomplished
Bloomington, IN (March 4, 2008) – The Giles Amendment (published by iUniverse) by Stirling Scruggs is the author’s first novel—a political thriller that takes an in depth look at the U.S. political system and examines women’s rights in America and abroad.

In The Giles Amendment, Congresswoman Shiloh Catherine Giles is determined to have the Equal Rights Amendment resolution pass, despite the fact that it has been killed during every session of Congress since 1982. In addition to being a member of Congress, Shiloh is an Episcopal minister, giving her a unique perspective on the battles on Capitol Hill. A champion for women’s rights, Shiloh knows that passing the resolution is paramount to her cause.

Shiloh gathers a grass roots constituency to work for passage, ratification and approval of the amendment, but she faces stiff opposition from the zealous religious right and higher powers at the White House. Her determination and persistence take her crusade through treacherous waters, and Shiloh ends up fighting for her very life. A gripping tale of politics, prejudice and greed, The Giles Amendment explores one woman's dedication and spirit against overwhelming odds.

With an extensive background in domestic and international social development—including positions with the Peace Corps and the UN, Scruggs provides a first-hand view of the battles women face in the U.S. and in less-developed countries. Through The Giles Amendment, he hopes to open American’s eyes to the injustices that are so common place in our society.

“My book is about an issue that many people probably think was handled long ago,” states Scruggs. “In America we have seen women rise politically and in the job market, but women still lack equal pay and equal protection in many areas. While laws exist, they are not practiced. The Giles Amendment is a story about a strong and determined woman who gives her life fighting for women’s equality.”

A moving and powerful novel, The Giles Amendment provides strong arguments supporting women’s rights while bringing awareness to what still needs to be accomplished. Scruggs poignantly displays why the U.S. and the entire international community needs the equal input of women.
