March 15, 2009 - PRLog -- Sleek race cars sped down the track -- a Trans Am and a Charger going wheel-to-wheel with an Army jeep, a skateboard, and a hotdog.  Not your typical day at the races for the Cub Scouts and families of Pack 263 in Farmington Hills.  The pack's annual Pinewood Derby race was held today, and the Kenbrook Elementary cafeteria was filled with the cheers of boys willing their cars to be the fastest down the track.

10 year-old Collin Doolan took that honor with the fastest overall time after 4 heats.  "That's the best I've ever done!" beamed Collin, holding his 1st Place trophy.  Two of the youngest members of the Pack were also the next two fastest.  Javier Tobar and Rafe Hobson took home 2nd and 3rd place trophies.

Pinewood cars are made from a kit that contains a 7 inch block of wood, four wheels and four axles.  To that modest start was added the young boys' imagination, and the results were amazing.  Cole Phillabaum won the Best Design award for his den with a car that was actually part mousetrap, complete with a furry mouse driver.

This year's derby had a special theme - "Made In Detroit".  Products and foods from many Detroit originals were celebrated and displayed throughout the event.  Banners, posters and prizes from the Big Three automakers as well as lunch treats from Domino's Pizza, Faygo, Vernors and the Detroit Popcorn Company, highlighted the best of what the area has to offer.  There was even an original nose section from Carl Edward's 2008 NASCAR Ford Fusion, with bits of rubber and oil from the track still clinging to it, courtesy of Roush Racing.

"Many people thanked us for focusing on the Detroit foods," said Jenn Garland, who ran the Pit Stop Cafe.  "It felt good to share some real hometown favorites."

The cub scouts and their families would like to thank those Detroit area companies responsible for many of the banners that decorated the event, prizes for winners of the games, and food donations:  Chevy Racing, Roush Racing, BBDO Detroit and Dodge, Made In Detroit Clothing Company, Hiller’s Market, Buddy’s Pizza, Costco Warehouse, Busch’s Fresh Food Market, The UPS Store, The Detroit Popcorn Company, The Detroit Tigers, Belle Tire, and Firestone Auto Care Store.  Their generous sponsorship of Cub Scout Pack 263's Pinewood Derby is yet another reason to continue to support our local businesses.
