PRLog -- Dr. Richard Fay is a professor of psychology and director of the Parmly Hearing Institute at Loyola University. He has been in these capacities since 2002 and is responsible for instructing lab courses, performing federally supported research, overseeing the operations of the Hearing Institute, implementing curriculum, acting as a host to visiting scholars and managing intern programs. Dr. Fay is a foremost authority on neuroscience and focuses his research on the mechanisms of the nervous system that synthesize perceptions of sound sources. His department studies fish to investigate these questions because they have simple and primitive vertebrate auditory systems and because they are able to carry out both behavioral (psychophysical)
and single-cell neurophysiologic experiments under comparable acoustic conditions in the laboratory. Dr. Fay’s current experiments investigate the perceptions and neural representations of pitch, timbre, temporal pattern and sound source location in goldfish and toadfish. His research has been encouraged and rewarded by Loyola University and as a result of this support, Dr. Fay has been able to conduct numerous instructive reviews and author a series of analyses. Dr. Fay is also a series editor for the Springer Handbook of Auditory Research and an esteemed member of the Acoustic Society of America, the Society of Neuroscience, the Association of Advancement of Science and the Association for Research of the Science of Otolaryngology. Dr. Fay graduated from the prestigious Princeton University with a Ph.D. in experimental psychology. He is active within the community and supports programs that benefit education. In his spare time, he enjoys travel, renovating his Massachusetts property and being with his family.
