RapidMiner finds out “new detergent stinks”

Leading detergent producer orders sentiment analysis and is shocked by the observed customer opinions.

Sept. 1, 2008 - PRLog -- A leading detergent producer wanted to know, what consumers think about one of its newly launched products.  Instead of starting a time-consuming and expensive study with the help of a traditional market research company, the producer placed an order with Rapid-I, an expert for web mining and automated online market research, in order to gain an affordable and highly up-to-date market insight.  After a short training period with example texts with different sentiments, the software RapidMiner provided by Rapid-I automatically searches the world wide web for opinions about this particular product, collects these expressed opinions, and automatically analyses their sentiment.  Many consumers freely express their opinions about products on web sites, in discussion forums, and in web blogs.  These uncensored opinions are freely available for everybody in the World Wide Web.  There is no better way to collect plain opinions.  The detergent producer found, that its detergent was unpopular, due to the strength of its smell.  Hence the previous publicity campaign with the main focus on the washing power had not worked, because many customers did not like the smell of the product.  The producer could now act and change the scents of its product.  Afterwards the company started a new publicity campaign with the main focus on the new and fresh smell and thereby could regain lost customers and attract new ones.

With its software RapidMiner, Rapid-I automatically searches the World Wide Web and categorizes web pages with the aid of the newest text mining technology.  This way it is possible to obtain an affordable and highly up-to-date sentiment analysis about individual products or about a company as a whole.  In addition to an aggregated statistic with the market insight from hundreds or thousands of opinions expressed in the internet, which summarizes how many customers have which sentiment, the RapidMiner also delivers the particularly characteristic key words and terms for each sentiment thereby providing an explanation for the sentiments found.
