PRLog -- Dr. Stephen J. Ryan is the president of Doheny Eye Institute, a top ranked research, education and patient care group of nonprofit organizations working together under an affiliation agreement between the Doheny Eye Institute, the USC Department of Ophthalmology and the Doheny Eye Medical Group. As president of the Doheny Eye Institute, Dr. Ryan is responsible for overseeing all of its operations, including strategic development, budget, human resources and marketing. His medical expertise includes more than three decades of practice specialization in retina and macular diseases, ocular trauma and vitreoretinal surgery. He is internationally known for his advances in the field of retinal diseases and ocular trauma and has provided congressional testimony on numerous occasions in support of the NIH and the National Eye Institute. Dr. Ryan is Home Secretary of the Institute of Medicine of The National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ryan has authored and edited eight books and 270 articles and has received many awards and honors, including the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars Award, the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Honor Award, the Research to Prevent Blindness Inc. Louis B. Mayer Scholar Award and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Kupfer Award for Distinguished Public Service. Dr. Ryan serves on the boards of Allergan, Inc., the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the W.M. Keck Foundation and the International Council of Ophthalmology. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, holds an A.B. in biology from Providence College, a M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Wilmer Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Ryan lives in San Marino, California, enjoys travel, reading and playing tennis.
