Triangle Area Veterans from WWII, Korea, Iraq, and all eras in between are offered an opportunity to tell their stories – and help recreate missing records for those who served with them.

July 15, 2008 - PRLog -- Raleigh, NC - The Veterans History Interview Event, held in Chatham County, offers Triangle area veterans an opportunity to share their experiences.  Volunteers will be available Saturday July 19th from noon to 4pm to interview local veterans and servicemembers from every branch and era.

If you or someone you know served in the military, the folks at Stanton Homes and the National Veterans History Archival Institute want to hear all about it.

Stanton Homes is helping collect stories from veterans and military personnel to preserve for families – and the rest of us – who want to be sure our American history is told by real people – the way it’s really happening.

The service is totally free – we’re volunteers, working with Cary-based National Veterans History Archival Institute (NVHAI), the organization that got this whole movement going, as it set out to record hundreds of thousands of recollections – and replace valuable service records lost in fires and floods over the past few years.

Veterans don’t have to be a big hero for their story to be important.

A recent interview was held with a WWII nurse who spent her entire military career on a ship, going from port to port only to have each military hospital tell the group they weren’t needed. She didn’t think that was much of a story, but it provided some fascinating insight.

And we talked with Leonard and Betty Fisher – because we believe there’s a lot to be said about the life of the spouse and family left behind, as well as the person who’s serving. Leonard was in the Navy for 22 years, so there’s a lot of history there.  Betty was thrilled with the interview.  She’s been trying to get Leonard to share those stories for years!

The NVHAI makes it easy to capture those stories, merely by listening, asking questions, and recording. These interviews won’t be edited. They’re archived just the way they’re told. The stories remain real and vital. And everything you’ve gone through, everything you thought about, everything you saw and heard and did is a part of it.  It doesn’t just have to be about long-ago conflicts, either – many of the interviews are with Iraq veterans, or with soldiers who served their country during peacetime.

On July 19th, Stanton Homes will host the Chatham County Be a Part of History: Veterans Interview Event.

Come on in and tell us your story. Day-to-day activities. History-changing conflicts. Or how you proposed from the other side of the world, raised a family, served and contributed and coped with life in the military.

Bring service records and whatever documentation you’ve got. We’ll take pictures of your paperwork to ensure your service is noted, especially since so many millions of records were lost during a devastating fire, and more recently, in Hurricane Katrina.

The NHAI is a volunteer organization staffed by local veterans who are passionate about preserving our history.

“Veterans want to be interviewed because they have a sense of duty that goes beyond self. Most veterans will gladly tell their story, if they would just be asked.” said Dave Milidonis, veteran and founder of the NHAI. “If we wait any longer, first hand accounts of our WWII and Korean War veterans will be lost forever. We want to be sure that we are moving quickly to record these, as well as more recent accounts of service in Afghanistan and Iraq.”
