June 12, 2008 - PRLog -- Shipyard Labs is now hosting open shop sessions during which participants in the Escape From Berkeley road rally can work on alternatively powered vehicles for the event.  Located in Berkeley, CA, Shipyard Labs is a do-it-yourself kinetic art space with a particular focus on alternative energy.  The full fabrication machine shop and spacious yard boast ample workroom for large projects.

The Escape From Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary) road rally is being held October 10th-13th 2008.  The three-day race will take contestants from Berkeley, CA to Las Vegas, NV. The vehicle entries may use any non-petroleum product as fuel.  Additionally, all fuel must be scavenged along the route.  Contestants cannot bring the fuel with them, nor buy it along the way.

The dates for coming open shops at Shipyard Labs are:

•   June 7th and 8th
•   July 19th and 20th
•   August 9th and 10th
•   September 20th and 21st
•   September 27th and 28th

Shipyard Labs, the event sponsor, is hosting these open shop weekends to support participants working on their vehicles. Contestants competing in the rally are building vehicle entries that will run on a variety of different power sources and fuels including solar, vegetable oil, and biomass.  The open shop weekends offer participants, as well the general public, a chance to build and learn more about the alternative energy technologies involved in the road rally.
