Preparing for Bright Futures
Asbury Works Honors Their Summer Interns with an Awards Ceremony

(Asbury Park, NJ)— Asbury Works and the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone Program will host an awards ceremony in honor of the young interns who participated in this year’s summer youth initiative program called “Best Foot Forward.”  The event will take place Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at the Salvation Army, located at 605 Asbury Avenue.  The ceremony is being held to celebrate the completion of the program as well as honor those who have excelled in the summer work program.

The program teaches employment skills education on such topics as work attitudes, time sheets, pay rates, excuses versus reasons and appropriate attire.  The program has been in effect for three years and is constantly expanding.

“The first year 27 students participated.  This number grew to 125 last year and is up to 144 this year.  We are extremely proud that the summer youth initiative program has been so successful and continues to grow,” said Ramona Thornton, Summer Youth Project Coordinator.

Along with preparing interns for the workplace, Asbury Works provides encouragement for young adults in order to inspire them to reach their full potential.  At the end of the initial training phase, the young trainees received job placement assistance to help land summer internships at local area businesses. As a result, many interns have been offered employment beyond the end of the program while others will be heading off to college in the fall.  A special award will be given to two outstanding students who excelled and have been asked to continue working beyond the program by the Little Tots Preschool and the Monmouth County Courthouse.

Younger participants are encouraged to keep up this effort throughout the 2007-2008 school year.  In order to qualify for next year’s program, students must pass all of their classes and avoid enrollment in summer school.  Asbury Works will be asking them to hand in their report cards for which they must have received a C average or better.
