Aug. 7, 2007 - PRLog -- If you're interested in beginning school soon in the medical or technological fields, then New Horizons Computer Learning Centers of Michigan (http://www.collegesurfing.com/ce/new-horizons-michigan/) is a good place to begin. For the most part, classes begin at the start of each month and last for six to 11 months (depending on the depth of the curriculum), says Director of Admissions Heather Keller.

New Horizons offers various certifications in both medical and technology concentrations. "We have medical billing, medical coding, pharmacy technology, and an information technology professional program, which is comprised of six or seven certifications," says Keller. "Unlike some other schools, we don't just issue a certificate of completion. All students receive certification with one of the associations; medical programs can be certified by a health association, while Microsoft, Novell, Cisco, and others certify our technology students."

And, she adds, "our programs are short-term and provide job skills training. Some of the programs are also more theory-based and you focus on what you'll be doing on the job."

Typically, students at New Horizons are the career switcher or the career advancer ranging in age from 18 to mid-late 50s. Career switchers have already had a career and decide to go into the medical or technology fields offered by New Horizons. "Advancers are already in the fields, but they want to move further ahead in their career by getting additional schooling," says Keller. "For example, some nurses that don't want to do nursing anymore come to us to go into the administrative side of their job."

New Horizons is an open-admission institution, so typically students know that they are interested in one of the programs and call the school to ask questions. Once they do this, they tour the school and can even sit in on a class. "We like for our potential students to get a feel for the environment first and see what the classroom is like," says Keller. "Here, they may see people just like themselves and get that comfortable feeling."

For those who choose to enroll, it's possible to jump right into their studies; classes usually begin each month. "This is great because students don't have to wait around for next semester and can start right away," says Keller.

In order to be successful, Keller suggests working hard and taking the prescribed course of study seriously. "Medicine and technology are both good fields to get into, and we'll continue to see growth in the fields in the next two years. If you're looking to make the commitment to change your career or advance it, take it seriously. Go to class every day and do all of your homework and studying. Once you're done, work with placement individuals for employment. Those in class every day and that have a good relationship with our placement individual are our most successful students."
