John F. Kennedy’s Inauguration Day Shirt Up For Auction

This is one of the last remaining artifacts of the Kennedy legacy still available to private collectors!

Aug. 5, 2007 - PRLog -- San Luis Obispo, California - 8/4/07 - This JFK shirt was first sold by Guernsey’s, the auction house famous for its sales of Kennedy memorabilia, and was worn by the newly-elected President John F. Kennedy on the day of his inauguration — January 20, 1961. When the third button from the collar went missing, Kennedy gave the shirt to his personal valet. The button remains missing even today. The shirt was custom-made in London for the appearance-conscious Kennedy. It is perhaps the last of Kennedy’s wardrobe to appear on the market and follows other rarities like his personal wrist watch (also sold by Guernsey) and attaché case (an early gift from Jacqueline) auctioned in the past few years.
The shirt is listed on eBay beginning today, with the auction running from August 6 at 4 PM (PST). Details are available now at
Passed from private owner to private owner, the shirt first appeared on the market in 1998 and was acquired by the current owner in 2006. The shirt has been thoughtfully preserved under clear acrylic and protected from direct light for at least the past nine years. The shirt is beautifully mounted in a 42” x 46” x 1.25” black and gilt wood frame with an official photograph of Kennedy, an actual invitation (itself scarce) to the inaugural address, and a brass plaque detailing the 1998 Guernsey listing.
The package is accompanied by Letters of Authenticity and Provenance detailing the current owner’s acquisition and valuation of the shirt.
