Follow on Google News | Darfur Wall Reaches $10k Milestone Within A Month689 donations to the organization helped fundraise over $10k.
By: Nishat Rizvi/Rivetink Since February 2003, the violence in Darfur has claimed at least 400,000 lives, displaced about 1.9 million people and made nearly 3 million people dependant on international aid for basic needs such as food, shelter and health. The Darfur Wall displays 400,000 numbers in remembrance of each person killed in the genocide. By donating one dollar or more, visitors to the wall can light a number, turning it from dark gray to brilliant white. Lighting a number acknowledges the importance of each life lost and brings attention to a tragedy that has been going on far too long. The visual impact of the wall, the lack of overhead charges, and the simple donation process has resonated well with people and been effective in building awareness. 100% of the proceeds are donated to directly benefit Darfur and people are able to create a record of their commitment when they donate. So far, 689 people have donated a dollar or more to get to the $10,000 milestone at the Darfur Wall, illustrating that even one dollar micro-donations can add up to have a much bigger impact. The daily operations of the organization are run by Jonah Burke, a former Microsoft employee with a long standing interest in social justice, poverty and peace. He is helped and advised in the endeavor by his brother Matt Burke and his father Dan Burke. About Darfur Wall Darfur Wall’s mission is to increase awareness about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan and help contribute to peaceful solutions in the Darfur area. 100% of the proceeds go directly to programs run by four relief organizations: Press inquiries: please contact nishat@rivetink.com End
