The 2013 Cadillac ATS Employs Advanced Design to Maximize Visibility

The North American Car of the Year includes advanced engineering to allow drivers to see better.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - March 15, 2013 - PRLog -- The 2013 Cadillac ATS, currently available at McGrath Buick GMC Cadillac (http://www.mcgrathbgc.com/), has one fantastic feature that most drivers don’t even consciously think about: visibility. Cadillac engineers went out of their way to design a car that could allow the driver to see the road and their surroundings better. This started with a series of clinics conducted in both the United States and Europe to develop insights into the needs of drivers, especially on demanding roads. All this research led to findings about how visibility works and what Cadillac could do to engineer a car around that premise of maximizing driver visibility.

Cadillac designers made a number of decisions about how to lay out the Cadillac ATS (http://www.mcgrathbgc.com/inventory/view/Model/ATS/New/SortBy0/). Driver visibility is always influenced by a number of things, including aerodynamics, safety, body stiffness, structural integrity, and style. Engineers considered exterior mirror size, A-pillar size, seat placement, and other potentially vision-blocking objects like the interior rearview mirror and headrests.

A number of factors in modern cars have resulted in sometimes-inhibited visibility. Modern cars often have dramatic swept-back windshields for both style and aerodynamics to improve efficiency. They also usually have higher hoods for pedestrian safety. A-pillars are often thicker in order to accommodate airbags. The ATS designers didn’t want to sacrifice any of these benefits, but wanted to improve the driver’s vision. They managed to keep the hood low and pushed the A-pillars out wide to give the driver an unobstructed view. The A-pillars were also made from high-tensile strength steel so that they could be thinner.

In order to improve rear vision, a camera was integrated into the tail, which feeds directly into the screen on the center stack. It even overlays the image with dynamic guidelines in order to provide the driver with help when parking.
