In August, she earned the rating of #1 Gamification Guru in the world by UK-based Leaderboarded. Each month, the online-engagement company produces a list of the Top 40 Gamificaton Gurus in the world using an algorithm that calculates Klout scores, website Alexa rank, and other factors to find the most credible voices in gamification.
When asked, “Why gamification in corporate training?” Cornetti responded, “Gamification is so much more that slapping points and badges, or adding games like Jeopardy!® to your training program. It is about the psychology of motivating and empowering a work team to be engaged and productive.”
She continued, “From the time I studied Skinner’s Behaviorism theory as an undergrad Psychology Major at Seton Hill College, I’ve been fascinated by operant conditioning or reinforcements to influence and shape people’s behavior. I always start with the business or learning objective and then identify the behaviors needed to achieve those objectives. When we understand that every behavior has a cause or motivation as well as a consequence – some desirable, some not so much, then we can start to design a program with gamification that will deliver a measurable ROI for my clients.”
Cornetti was quick to add with a laugh and a smile, “Really, I’m all about the fun! Good employees want to contribute, they want to learn; they want to grow. My passion is to take what would otherwise be dry, lecture-based training, and turn it into a fun, interesting, challenging experience that sticks and can be applied in a real-world setting.”
Although ranked as #1 Gamification Guru, Cornetti feels that her work is just beginning. She said, “I lead some kind of leadership or creative thinking session with organizations almost every week. Top level executives, HR, and even training professionals - yet less than 2% in any of my sessions have even heard of gamification. With those kind of numbers, it is my mission to continue to get my message out that it’s time to get rid of dull, boring, mind-numbing training once and for all!”
