Dec. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Instant Checkmate’s San Diego office, located in Pacific Beach, has partnered with established nonprofit San Diego Dream Center, an organization which provides assistance and counseling services to San Diego’s growing homeless population.

The Instant Checkmate office is currently hosting a massive internal donations drive. All of Instant Checkmate’s San Diego staff are encouraged to donate clothing and supplies to aid homeless citizens during the winter season. Staff will be focused on collecting the following items:

- Blankets/Sleeping Bags
- Socks
- Warm adult clothing
- Non-perishable prepackaged foods

A quote from San Diego Dream Center’s website reveals the need to address the problem of displacement and homelessness in the greater San Diego area:

“Reports from the Mayor’s office now indicate that there are currently 1,198 people sleeping on the streets of downtown San Diego and over 10,232 homeless county-wide. The County of San Diego Child Welfare Services estimates there are 2,200 homeless children in San Diego with only 3,975 families and adults living in sheltered and transitional housing. Local homeless shelters have a 6-8 week waiting list, very often drug and alcohol recovery programs do not have beds and the funding they need to meet the demand.”

Many independent studies reveal that the majority of San Diego’s homeless population consists of war veterans, young children, and individuals who are mentally ill and unable to care for themselves. Due to state and county-wide budget cuts, institutions that cater to these special needs individuals have been unilaterally defunded, and as a result, thousands of vulnerable populations have been displaced into the streets of downtown San Diego.

The company’s internal donations drive began on November 27th, and will last until December 14th. On Saturday, December 15th the San Diego Dream Center and Instant Checkmate team members will distribute the collected resources directly to San Diego’s homeless citizens.

Instant Checkmate is specifically partnering with the San Diego Dream Center on their “Adopt-A-Block” program. Volunteers from both groups will identify particular streets with high levels of displacement, and distribute the supplies directly to the homeless community. With this program, block leaders take requests for clothing, food and furniture, and assist the community by cleaning streets, painting over graffiti, and making minor home repairs. This initiative has seen several success stories, and will be part of Instant Checkmate’s continued efforts to dedicate resources to public safety.

Instant Checkmate’s public relations official, Kristen Bright, released a statement about the new initiative. “Public safety and social justice are themes that strongly correlate to our product. These issues are discussed at length in our company blog, but Instant Checkmate officials felt it was time to do something a little more concrete. This community outreach initiative will have a tangible impact on San Diego’s most at-risk population.”

The company has indicated in several other public statements that for the year 2013, Instant Checkmate is allocating resources towards public services, and charitable contributions. Instant Checkmate demonstrates to other profit-driven startups that with growth, comes responsibility. This renewed commitment to public service and community outreach raises the bar and sets a new standard for other startups to live up to.
