MG Limited Examines: Is it Possible to Have Only Strengths and No Weaknesses?

At MG Limited we believe that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and we use the strengths of our team to our advantage. But have we been unfair to ourselves and dismissing our weaknesses too easily?

Nov. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Dr Tommy Thomas, an America psychologist, is following in the footsteps of his father and lectures CEOs on how to rethink the concepts of strengths and weaknesses. MG Limited took some time out to study his new way of thinking and find out how we could end up with strengths and no weaknesses.

According to Dr Thomas, society has taught us to define our characteristics and skills into two; strengths and weaknesses. Those things we’re not good at are called weaknesses and we are told that they should be disguised and ignored. He believes this leaves us with a confusing message; that in order to be successful we only need half of ourselves, our strengths.

As a society we tend to think in a positive-negative framework so when we think about a strength, we immediately start looking for a negative, a weakness. Certain members of the team at MG Limited see one of their positive traits as being outgoing. Dr Thomas argues that those people need to think of their quiet side, not as a weakness but an opposite strength. Dr Thomas believes that executives make the mistake of reinforcing their strengths – by doing something they’re ‘good’ at themselves – and avoid their weaknesses – by delegating.

By learning to use your supporting, or opposite, strengths as Dr Thomas calls them, you will find yourself a more rounded businessperson. There will be times when being quiet and listening with be advantageous to you. Don’t dismiss your opposite strengths because you’ve always viewed them as your weaknesses. Instead practice them in the same way that you would practice something that you’re already good at and want to excel at. One of the team at MG Limited writes ‘I’ve always believed that there are certain things that I’m not as good at because they’re not part of my personality, Dr Thomas's theory definitely makes me have a more positive attitude towards them.’

Dr Thomas believes that by removing the negative connotations that surround things that you find harder or don’t come naturally to you, a person is more likely to make an effort to improve them and see them as important. At MG Limited we found that when we no longer discussed negatives or ‘thing’s we’re not good at’ we were much more willing to improve and see how important they are to us. Suddenly we don’t have to find ways around things and the office is a much more positive place!
