Looking to improve your Golf Game this winter?

Spending some time this winter working on your golf swing and fitness will pay dividends come spring when golf courses are open again.

Dec. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- We have all seen golf tour professionals hit the ball to extreme distances with ease and consistency.  But how?

The average player lacks power and feel.  This is due to their inability to connect their muscle movement into one flowing rotation.   Due to reliable repetition of their body movements (practice makes perfect), tour pros have mastered the fluidity of motion that allows them to get the most out of their swing, every time!

How, you may ask?

Since winter is on its way, think about whether you would stand in front of your car to pull it out of a snow bank or stand behind it to push it out.  We all know the answer—the push is much stronger then the pull.  When you push, your entire body works together to generate enough force and speed to move the target—in this case, the car.

Likewise in golf.  Your wrist on its own is not as strong as your arm and wrist together.  Likewise, your arm is not as strong as your legs and arms together.  Nothing is as strong as your whole body together.

Exactly how do we get the body into the swing? Abs, legs, hips, lower back, arms and shoulders must rotate AS ONE to the target and you will be using your entire body to create that much needed power and fluidity of movement.

To test this, grab a ball and throw it as far as you can with both feet firmly in one place.  Try again, this time taking a step and squaring yourself to the target while you throw.  This exercise will prove once again that the body is much stronger when it works as a whole.

So, this winter work on strengthening the entire body so that you’re ready to put this into practise on the golf course come spring.
•  Do some yoga and pilates to loosen and strengthen your core, and balance your body
•  Add some light weight training for overall strength
•  The best drill uses a medicine ball.  Get in your golf stance, rotate the ball back and turn. Then, using your whole body, rotate and throw the ball to your target.  The faster and stronger you rotate through the ball, the more speed created in your swing.
