A Fresh Look At Fine Art Education

Local students win top awards in art contest

Oct. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- Santa Clarita, California (October 12, 2010) –

The 2010 Santa Clarita Street Art Festival was held on Oct. 2 & 3 in downtown Newhall with one of the features of the event being the “Art on Canvas” competition.  This year’s theme for the competition “A Fresh Look.” was open to residents of the Santa Clarita Valley.  Out of approximately 1000 entries, the City’s Arts & Events Council had the unenviable task of choosing 20 artworks from each age category, that best fit the theme, to be displayed over the weekend event.

Local students who attend Mission: Renaissance Fine Art Classes in Valencia were strongly represented and took home many of the top honors.  In all, sixteen Mission: Renaissance students were displayed at the event and the following students of the fine art school received special recognition:  In the K-4 category, Ria Bakhaya was awarded 3rd place, Natalie Hudson received 2nd place and the People’s Choice Award.  In the 5th – 8th grade category, Alyssa Lau was awarded 3rd place.  And in the Professional Category, 3rd place went to Heather Dubois.  First Place, Second Place and the People’s Choice Award went to Mission: Renaissance Program Directors, Sarah Bukowsky and Laura Frazier respectively.

“I think that in this time of record budget cuts taking art education out of the schools, the fact that our [Mission: Renaissance] students were so strongly represented in this event highlights the void we fill in the community with respect to art education.  Teaching children the basics of fine art is an essential part of their development and unlocks the door to their creative selves,”  said Sarah Bukowsky after receiving her awards.  Laura Frazier added, “We applaud the city for their efforts to promote art in the schools through events like this.”

Established in 1975, Mission: Renaissance is considered to be the world’s largest fine art program for children, teens, and adults with more than 2000 students attending classes each week.  For more information visit: www.fineartclasses.com
